Protecting Your Maryland Property from Grubs

Grubs can quickly cause extensive damage to your grass if you’re not careful.

Our lawns are susceptible to grubs and insects that like to dine on the healthy grass we have put effort into maintaining. Some pests are so microscopic that you might not notice until the damage is done, taking weeks or months to repair. These pests can quickly cause extensive damage to your grass if you’re not careful. Let’s go over how to protect your property from grubs.

Identifying a Grub Problem

White grub larvae typically hatch in late spring or early summer. These larvae or grubs damage plants by feeding on roots and are identifiable by their creamy white color and three pairs of legs.

Areas with damage will appear brown or stressed. When walking over feeding sites, the grass will move like sod or carpet due to the detached roots from the soil beneath. If you see any of these animals foraging in your lawn, it’s a strong indication of a grub infestation:

  • Raccoons
  • Skunks
  • Moles
  • Birds

How Grubs Damage Your Lawn

The grub’s feeding cycles and potential damage are at a peak in the fall months. Grubs heavily feed during this time to prepare to overwinter and return in the spring to attack the lawn’s root system again. Damage happens, especially when it’s dry. The grubs eat roots and the turf dries out, and you’ll find them underneath. The damage can be extensive, requiring detaching or removing existing turf in layers from the lawn. Preventing grubs from invading your lawn can save hundreds to thousands of dollars of damage in lawn care restoration services.

Grub Control from On The Green, Inc.

The key to controlling grubs is to kill them before they hatch and damage your lawn. It is very important to get ahead of a grub control infestation by protecting your lawn. You will likely deal with grubs at some point. When that happens, the most common solution is using chemical applications to eliminate grubs. They are effective, easy to use, and work quickly.

However, there are also some serious risks to using chemical insecticides, and even though many people apply them themselves, it’s still recommended to call a professional. At On The Green Inc, we apply our Surface Insect and Grub Preventative as a part of our Green Care Lawn Program.

If you have found grubs in your lawn, please call us today to discuss Grub Control for current damage and our safer alternative to prevention in the future care of your lawn.
