Severn Run Natural Environment Area

If you’re looking for less of a public area and more of a natural sanctuary, then this 1,600-acre greenway is for you. Located near Najoles Road off I-97, it’s possible to drive by these trails without ever knowing they were there! With multiple entrances and only dirt trails, the peace and solitude that Severn Run provides is comforting after a hectic work week. Not just for hiking/jogging/biking, you can fish for brook trout and yellow perch or go hunting for wild mushrooms.

Patapsco Valley State Park

Forty minutes north of Severn, Maryland, the first official state park has multiple developed areas totaling more than 14,000 acres.

Different areas include:

McKeldin: Western section featuring trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. Also includes course for Frisbee golf and Patapsco River for fishing.
Daniels: The Daniels dam allows for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.
Hollofield: Central section of the park featuring a 73-site campground. Also includes hiking trails and a scenic overlook above the river valley.
Pickall: Playgrounds, Picnic shelters.
Hilton: Mini-cabins in a small campground, a nature center, and access to many trails.
Avalon/Glen Artney/Orange Grove Flour Mill: Historic sites including the Old Gun Road Stone Arch Bridge, Orange Grove Flour Mill, Cascade Falls, and Swinging Bridge.

Kinder Farm Park

Fifteen minutes’ drive northwest of Arnold, Kinder Farm Park offers 288 acres of farmland. The kids will love interacting with the goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, ducks, and more. In addition to Harvest Hall, which holds 100-200 people and is available for reservation, Kinder Farm Park also houses two large picnic pavilions, complete with picnic area. The park has the largest disc golf course in the county, as well as a 2.4-mile hiker/biker trail. They also offer educational tours.
