Patapsco Valley State Park

Just a ten-minute drive north from Columbia, Maryland’s first official state park has multiple developed areas totaling more than 14,000 acres.

Different areas include:

McKeldin: Western section featuring trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. Also includes course for Frisbee golf and Patapsco River for fishing.
Daniels: The Daniels dam allows for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.
Hollofield: Central section of the park featuring a 73-site campground. Also includes hiking trails and a scenic overlook above the river valley.
Pickall: Playgrounds, Picnic shelters.
Hilton: Mini-cabins in a small campground, a nature center, and access to many trails.
Avalon/Glen Artney/Orange Grove Flour Mill: Historic sites including the Old Gun Road Stone Arch Bridge, Orange Grove Flour Mill, Cascade Falls, and Swinging Bridge.

Gambrill State Park

An hour drive west of Columbia, Gambrill State Park is separated into two areas: Rock Run and High Knob. From the three stone overlooks atop the 1600-foot High Knob, you can view Frederick and Middletown Valleys, as well as the Shenandoah Mountains. High Knob also holds The Tea Room, a native-stone building built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s, complete with kitchen, dining room, and two restrooms. The building is available to rent from spring to fall, and holds up to 55 people. The Rock Run area provides a campground and small cabins available for reservation.


Robinson Nature Center

Located on Cedar Lane in Columbia, Robinson Nature Center is an 18-acre park that features a 23,000-square-foot nature center building. The three-story building has a 150-seat auditorium, a planetarium, solar panels, and geothermal heating.
